Rich Kids – Islington Academy, Jan 2010
After 30 years apart, the RICH KIDS reformed for a special one-off show, a benefit for my old school-friend STEVE NEW. Steve (or Stella) is suffering from terminal cancer, so it was great to see some of his old friends on stage, including Carbon Silicon (Mick Jones and Tony James), Gary Kemp, and Midge Ure.
At the after-show party I had a few beers with Mick Jones (The Clash) and reminisced about our old days on the punk scene, and our eventful trip to the Mont de Marcan festival in 1977 (which I photographed!). Chatted to Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols) for a while, who had done a great job co-ordinating the event. Steve Stella New opted to stay in the dressing room with his family…it had been an emotional evening. Our thoughts are with Steve and his family.
JUST A SHORT NOTE TO SAY HI,AND WHAT A GREAT GIG THE RICH KIDS NIGHT WAS,I TO WAS AT SCHOOL WITH STEVE ,JUST WONDERED IF WE MIGHT KNOW EACH OTHER,IM GARY PEARCE OR PIDDLE AS EVERY THEN USE TO CALL ME

RIP – Steve New, 50, tried out for the Sex Pistols at 15, but when Glenn Matlock was fired the pair formed the Rich Kids instead. They reunited in January, 31 yrs after splitting, to benefit New’s kids after his inevitable passing from cancer. http://urdead2me.wordpress.com/2010/05/24/rip-steve-new/

I e-mailed Phil at the Sex Pistols site and suggested that the gig be recorded somehow, either video, film or at least audio. Phil talked to Glen and Glen arranged something although I’m not sure of the details. This is one of those times where it is known beforehand that it is definitely the last ever gig. No idea of the quality of the finished product or if it will ever be released. It’d be great to get at least a CD of the gig. The audio that is available is not great but it is not the officially sanctioned recording. As long as there was a split feed and it is not the PA mix it should be good.
